Beat me to the Toronado. God, I love how that thing looks. I would give a leg for one. Or maybe just a foot, since they’re now worth less than a new Corolla.

It’s really one of the most underrated cars of the 60s looks wise. Would buy one over pretty much any other American car from the era in a heartbeat.

I don't know who to put pictures in but the Phantom Corsair is a clear winner (it is cord based though so I guess that's something :p ) the Citroen traction avant is pretty damn nice too.

If the Chrysler Turbine hadn’t been eviscerated, I would buy one of those over this, but otherwise I agree. Few things are cooler than the Turbine.

Originally this was the Pininfarina design for the 456 but Ferrari said nah. Peugeot got word of this and asked if they could have it. Pininfarina LOLed and said “What you frenchies want our supercar design for your econoboxes? You know what, screw it, take it”. Peugeot then released the 406 and everyone was like “Wow, that looks like a Ferrari!”. Ferrari was like “Wait, what just happened” and then Pininfarina continued to LOL all the way to the bank.

Cord L 29 Speedster, because open top motoring is simply better.

I’ve seen those up close and personal, even saw them drag racing last summer against other Auburns, Cords, and yes, Duesenbergs. They’re beautiful. But in my opinion, completely eclipsed by Cord’s later effort, the 810/812:
I also love the ‘66 Oldsmobile Toronado, which gets some styling cues from the 810/812:
Also, just for bragging rights, here’s my perspective from the cockpit of a Duesenberg Indy car, racing down a runway against a Cord. :P
Here’s the car from the outside:
And here’s an L-29 racing an Auburn:

First off very jealous.
And second was this during the big auction over Labor Day weekend? Because if so I missed the drag racing event

It was. I was the main photographer for the ACD Club during the weekend. Technically there are two separate events in Auburn that same weekend: the Auction you already know about, and the ACD Festival that happens in downtown Auburn. There’s a car show that’s kind of a mix of a car show and a concours in the park by the ACD Museum on Saturday, then a parade and car stuff downtown. Then this past year they also ran the Duesenberg Thunder Run, which actually took place at the Goshen Airport, about an hour west of Auburn. They ran those drag races, had a jet truck, a B-17, Ford Tri-Motor, helicopter rides, bi-plane rides, etc. It was fun. Being the photographer was pretty hectic though. Luckily we had a golf cart, because we were seriously all over that air field all day long.
If you want to check out any of the other shots from either of the days (or the Duesenberg Luncheon on Friday which took place at a country club in Fort Wayne), here’s the link:

I will check them out later. But damn that sounds like a very fun day. I did’t realize this event was an hour away I thought it took place near the auction. Guess I know where I will be next time I go up though. Thanks for the info!

No problem! The car show and ACD Festival is right downtown, so it’s only maybe 10 minutes from the Auction, and very worth going to in my opinion. But the Thunder Run was an hour away. Sadly, I think that’ll probably be a once every 5 years thing, or something like that. They did something similar in 2010, and then this one in 2015. I haven’t heard any plans for a repeat this year, and frankly it just makes sense not to. If the goal is to attact a large number of Duesenberg owners from all over the country, it has to be spread out quite a bit to keep their interest and to let the owners repair their cars after running them so hard. The announcer, Randy Ema (who has been on Jay Leno’s Garage quite a few times for Duesenberg stuff), was even warning drivers not to rev their engine above 3,000 RPM (or something like that) if they’ve never seen the inside of it to know its condition.

Randy Ema is a true hero. I would love to meet that guy in person. And I was able to attend the down town event as well. I was actually there that day researching in the archives and planned it so I could also attend the car show and the auction.
Too bad it will only be every five years, but at least it is something to look forward to.

So agree on Ema. He’s awesome. I started watching Jay Leno’s Garage when I was a teenager (27 now... it’s been going on that long!?), and he was always there with those awesome Duesenbergs.
He and another guy walked past me while I was setting up a shot at the country club right before all the Duesenbergs arrived, and I was completely taken aback. For some reason I didn’t even expect him to be there. So I stumbled to my feet and said, “Excuse me, but are you Randy Ema?” To which he said he was. I said, “Can I shake your hand? Thank you so much for taking care of all those amazing Duesenbergs and for making the appearances with Jay Leno!” He shook my hand and went inside. For the rest of the events, I just kind of gawked at him every time I saw him. That’s probably the closest I’ve come to meeting a celebrity, or at least one that I care about.

I wish they still had the old videos of Ema and Jay up online talking about the Duesenbergs!
But that is still awesome you got to shake his hand. I probably would have acted exactly as you did.
